Tam Jai International – Serving Up a Future of Green and Sustainable Dining

[Tam Jai International was awarded “Green Shop of the Year – Merit” in the Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award 2023]

As one of the leading restaurant groups in Hong Kong, Tam Jai International is committed to being a pioneer of sustainability in the catering industry. With nearly 200 restaurants in the city, it is taking strides toward environmental stewardship by striving to eradicate single-use plastics, managing food waste responsibly, and increasing the range of healthy and sustainable food choices for customers. In 2023, all branches of the Group were Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance members.

Plastic-free Packaging

Since October 2023, the Group has completely replaced all plastic cutlery with eco-friendly paper alternatives, and customers are required to pay HK$1 for each takeaway cutlery set. The response has been remarkable, with approximately 70% of customers opting out of disposable cutlery. In addition to this new cutlery policy, the Group also launched a Thomas Napoleon reusable cutlery set redemption campaign to further encourage customers to rethink their habits regarding reusable cutlery.

Reducing Food Waste

To promote mindful consumption and combat food waste, the Group incentivises its customers to opt for “Less Noodles” or “Light Noodles” by offering a HK$1 discount. Furthermore, the Group has initiated a pilot food waste recycling program in collaboration with landlords, and is actively exploring opportunities to expand these initiatives to further reduce solid waste and promote recyclability. By conducting waste audits at its restaurants, the Group has likewise identified opportunities for solid waste reduction. In collaboration with Foodlink Foundation, the Group’s central kitchen has donated nearly 2,000kg of surplus pork belly, which equates to around 4,600 meal boxes for those in need.

Plant-based and Healthier Offerings

「Both noodle brand Tam Jai and SamGor offer “Go Green” menus with plant-based options, promoting healthier, low-carbon diets. This aligns with their ESG commitment to reduce carbon emissions by providing green food choices. Furthermore, both brands have earned a two-star rating under the Eat Smart Scheme, showcasing their commitment to support customers who want to adopt a healthy eating lifestyle.
