Towards a Green Mall: Energy Conservation and Waste Reduction in Bellagio Mall
Located in Sham Tseng, adjacent to Bellagio, Bellagio Mall is managed by Harriman Management Services Limited. This five-storey shopping mall is home to restaurants, daily necessity stores and supermarkets, providing a convenient lifestyle for nearby residents.
In terms of energy saving, lighting accounts for the mall’s largest energy consumption. In view of this, the mall is designed with floor-to-ceiling glass and skylights, which help to introduce natural light and reduce the use of indoor lighting during the day, thus saving energy. The mall also uses high-energy-efficiency bulbs, namely Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs, to provide sufficient light while also reducing bulb turnover.
Air-conditioning is another major consumer of energy. At Bellagio Mall, the main doors and side doors are equipped with an automatic door return function to avoid the loss of air-conditioning through open doors, thereby further reducing energy waste.
In addition, elevators and lifts in the mall are suspended during non-peak hours (11:00 pm - 6:00 am) to reduce electricity consumption.
Bellagio Mall also obtained Diamond Level certification in the "Umbrella Bags Reduction Accreditation Program 2022" organised by Greeners Action. Disposable umbrella plastic bags have now been completely replaced with umbrella dryers to help reduce plastic usage and minimise solid waste.
