IKEA – Promoting Sustainability Online and in the Community

[IKEA was awarded “Green Shop of the Year – Certificate of Excellence” in the Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award 2023]

IKEA is dedicated to supporting sustainable development through a variety of means. By helping the public to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle through affordable furniture and home furnishing products that help conserve the earth’s resources and energy, IKEA is playing an active role in raising awareness of sustainable concepts in the community.

Giving Display Furniture a Second Life

Following the successful launch of Bargain Corners in IKEA stores, where customers can purchase display and discontinued items at reduced rates, IKEA collaborated with second-hand online marketplace Carousell in 2022 to enable its stores in Kowloon Bay, Shatin, and Tsuen Wan, as well as its Sai Wan Ho pick up point and bargain corner, to sell display items and discontinued models at discounted prices on the online platform. This important initiative not only offers consumers another option when shopping for home furniture, it also gives good-condition display furniture a second life. This greatly reduces waste and encourages more sustainable consumption. In the campaign’s first year, the four dedicated IKEA accounts on Carousell had over 770,000 views.

Lighting Up Hope in the Community

“Caring for people and planet” is one of IKEA’s core values, and is reflected in its commitment to the communities where it operates. In 2023, IKEA Hong Kong started partnering with Caritas Hong Kong Youth and Community Service under the “Light Up Hope” programme, which aims to help families in inadequate housing reduce their energy consumption and expenses to improve their quality of life. IKEA donated LED light bulbs, work lamps, and cooling beddings to the programme, and organised educational workshops for the recipients, teaching them valuable energy-saving knowledge. It also visited local schools to help educate students about the impact of climate change and the importance of energy conservation.

Guided by its vision of creating a better everyday life for everyone, IKEA is committed to achieving climate positivity by 2030.
