HomeSquare – Using Renewable and Smart Solutions to Reduce Carbon Emissions and Electricity Consumption

HomeSquare is located in the heart of Sha Tin. It is a one-stop home furnishing mall owned by Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited and managed by Kai Shing Management Services Limited. The mall not only strives to enhance the shopping experience for its customers, but also actively participates in environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives, thus adhering to its guiding principle of “Green sustainability leads the way, Community learning is here to stay.”

Using Renewable Energy for a Reduced Carbon Footprint

To promote renewable energy, HomeSquare has established the largest solar panel area in the New Territories, installing nearly 600 solar panels covering an area of over 10,000 square feet. The solar energy system generates over 177,000 watt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity usage of 70 households. This contributes to a reduction in the mall’s carbon footprint, and the savings in electricity costs are reinvested into more environmental projects. HomeSquare also participates in the CLP Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (FiT) Scheme to support the development of renewable energy with practical actions.

Utilising Smart Technology to Improve Energy Efficiency

Moreover, the mall utilises an Internet of Things (IoT) system to control lighting and air conditioning. The air conditioning system is divided into different zones for management, with one-third of the system remaining on standby to maintain indoor comfort with minimal energy consumption. The system also allows remote control of lighting and air conditioning, and includes an automatic adjustment mode. For instance, exterior lighting automatically turns on based on the sunset time each day to better meet the mall’s actual lighting needs, thus reducing energy consumption and achieving further energy savings. By leveraging smart technology to improve energy efficiency, HomeSquare is leading its tenants and customers toward a greener future and helping to propel the broader sustainable development agenda.
