Mira Place - Advancing Sustainable Retail with Diverse Green Initiatives

As one of the flagship properties of Miramar Group, Mira Place has made significant strides in sustainability and green initiatives across diverse areas, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental protection and community well-being. Notably, its recent efforts in reducing municipal solid waste and energy consumption, along with creative approaches to promote green awareness, have been recognised and set a benchmark for sustainable practices in the retail sector.
The “Food TranSmarter” – Reduction of Municipal Solid Waste
In April 2024, Mira Place installed a cutting-edge food waste treatment system known as “Food TranSmarter”. Developed by The Hong Kong Productivity Council and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, this is the first system in Hong Kong that automatically liquefies food waste into slurry. At Mira Place, Food TranSmarter transforms food waste collected from the mall’s dining establishments and the staff canteen, which is then converted into slurry and transported to sewage plants for biogas production. Since its implementation, it has processed over 7.6 tons of food waste, showcasing its effectiveness in diverting waste from landfills. This initiative not only reduces the environmental impact of food waste but also supports the generation of renewable energy.
Solar Film Applications for Energy Saving
As part of its key initiatives to achieve energy saving and promote sustainability, Mira Place has installed high-quality solar films on the most exposed glazing areas of the mall. These solar films significantly reduce solar heat gain by 40%, thereby maintaining a comfortable indoor environment and reducing the need for air conditioning. This measure enhances energy efficiency while also contributing to the overall reduction of the mall’s carbon footprint.
Green Walls – Promoting Environmental Awareness from Within
In line with the Group's “Mi Go Green” initiative, large green walls were incorporated into the design of Mira Place's recently renovated lobby. This creative approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space but also promotes awareness among tenants and visitors, serving as a visual reminder of environmental protection and sustainability. The green walls symbolise Mira Place’s dedication to integrating nature into urban spaces, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility within the community.
