Uptown Plaza – How a Green Mall Contributes to a Sustainable Community

[Uptown Plaza was awarded “Collaborative Project of the Year (Behavioural Change) – Merit” in the Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award 2024]

Uptown Plaza is located next to Tai Po MTR Station, putting it at the heart of a convenient transportation network. With over 100 shops, it provides local residents with a diverse daily shopping experience. Over the years, Uptown Plaza has continuously promoted and implemented various green measures, aiming to increase residents' awareness of environmental protection and collectively build a sustainable community.

Collaboration with Stakeholders for Waste Reduction and Recycling

Uptown Plaza has always maintained close cooperation with stakeholders and actively assisted the Government in implementing various environmental policies. For example, it has invited different stakeholders, including tenants, customers and residents, to try waste reduction and recycling measures, and assisted in collecting important data such as tenants' food waste and food container usage, thus providing critical indicators for Government to implement environmental policy.

Green Initiatives in the Mall

To encourage residents in the community to embrace a greener lifestyle, Uptown Plaza has set up waste sorting and recycling bins at different locations in the mall, encouraging more people to start sorting at source while also helping them to cultivate new habits of waste reduction and recycling. In addition, Uptown Plaza has established an environmental education path in the mall, encouraging residents to cherish resources, reduce waste, and live greener.

Staff Training

As part of its dedication to occupational health and safety, Uptown Plaza is committed to ensuring that its cleaning staff understand the concepts of waste disposal and recycling. In addition to strengthening staff training, notices are posted near different recycling bins to ensure that all waste is correctly sorted and recycled.

Through these green initiatives, Uptown Plaza has not only improved the quality of the living environment in the local community, but it is also encouraging the neighbourhood to take the first step towards a greener lifestyle.
